Flooding can cause thousands of dollars of damage to carpets, furniture, upholstery, household appliances, electronics, and more. The sooner the clean-up process is begun, the more chance there is of keeping damage to expensive items, such as furniture, floor coverings and other personal belongings to a bare minimum.
Wet Carpets Dried
Water or flood damage can be fairly minor such as a flooded basement, or it can be the beginning of a process leading to the destruction of a building. It goes without saying that all cases of flood damage should have the clean-up process commenced as soon as possible and that you need the services of a specialist flood restoration company.
A specialist service will have high-tech equipment and will be able to assess the amount of the damage and the best way to undertake the cleanup process. Furthermore, it may well be able to salvage important belongings or family heirlooms and in extreme cases may even save the building from being condemned.
Restoration After Flooding
Mould Issues Solved – Permanently
Water damage to carpets and furniture may be in one of three different categories. The first category is clean water which may be the result of an overflowing appliance or a leaking water pipe and does not pose any threat to people. Category 2 is grey water and is contaminated with microorganisms which may cause sickness if it is drunk. This may be water from a broken or overflowing toilet or some form of seepage. Category 3 is black water which contains bacteria that will cause sickness, and may be a result of sewage problems.

In addition, there are different classes of water damage. Class 1 is the easiest to clean up and involves very little damage. Class 2 affects carpets and upholstery and is more difficult to clean up. Class 3 involves water damage from overhead sources such as sprinklers or a broken pipe above the ceiling, perhaps from a bathroom above, and affects walls and furniture. Class 4 may damage plaster, hardwood floors, and even concrete.
Without a shadow of doubt, the first step in the flood restoration process is to get rid of the water as fast as possible. In the right conditions it is perfectly possible for mould spores to begin developing within 24 – 36 hours, and mould spores can and will affect health.
A specialist flood restoration company may set up dehumidifiers, heaters, and fans in order to dry out carpets in situ or may use a carpet water extractor on a flooded carpet. An alternative may be to remove the carpet entirely and take it to the restoration company’s premises for specialist drying there where it can also be treated for any mould spores.
Carpet Water Damaged
In addition a flooded carpet may be treated in situ by the use of diatomaceous earth. This product must not be inhaled and must be used by an operator wearing a dust mask, while children and pets are kept away from the area.
Another way of drying out wet carpet could be simply to take it outside and let it dry in the sun if weather conditions are right. It would be best dried on a clothes line or by placing it over some garden benches or anywhere else where the air can circulate around the carpet.
Of course, the foregoing carpet water damage solutions only apply in the case of the carpet having been damaged by clean water or grey water. If the flooding was from black water then the only safe thing to do is to dispose of the carpet. If you dry it out and keep it then there is a grave risk of having a breeding ground for allergens and dangerous bacteria right in the middle of your home.
Flood Damage Repair To Furniture
Wooden furniture that has been damaged by flood may very often be able to be restored. Again, the first thing to do is to let it dry out which can be done by turning on the heating and using fans. Alternatively, if weather conditions are suitable the furniture can be taken outside and left to dry in the sun. However, the temperature needs to be right. If it is too cold the wood will dry too slowly and mould will form, and if it is too hot the furniture may crack.
Flood Damage Repairs
If white spots have formed on the furniture these can be treated with a proprietary cleaner, but if black spots form this means that the water has seeped through the finish into the wood and mildew has developed. This requires the finish to be removed and the mildew treated with a bleach solution after which the finish must be reapplied.
If furniture has a veneer which has warped or buckled it may well be possible to restore it. The veneer can be soaked with a moisturiser until it lies down flat again when it needs to be wiped dry and cleaned. Veneer glue can then be applied between the veneer and the wood beneath by use of a syringe and a block of timber or other heavy object placed on top until the glue has dried for the period stipulated by the manufacturer.
It cannot be emphasised too much that in most cases requiring flood restoration you need the services of a specialist. Certainly, a flooded basement may be able to be pumped out with a submersible pump, and if the flooding is caused by land drainage problems then these either have to be addressed or may require the installation of a permanent submersible pump that switches on automatically when there is an ingress of water.
However, in the majority of cases of flood restoration the answer is to call in the experts. In most cases the costs involved will be less than the restoration of long term damage caused by poor management of flooding and will also most often be covered by insurance in any case.

One of the worst things that can possibly happen to any home or business is to suffer from flood damage. If there is very heavy rain, or a heavy fall of snow which melts quickly when the weather warms up there is an increased chance of water damage, but it is not just the weather which can cause a problem.
Water damage can be caused by many things in and around the home such as plumbing leaks, roofing leaks, overflowing washing machines, clogged up toilets, broken pipes, leaking dishwashers, hoses on washing machines or dishwashers broken, or even cracks in the foundations of the building. It can also be the result of the efforts of the fire department in putting out a fire in the building.

“I can’t thank Annmaree and Damon enough for coming to my rescue after extensive flooding of my apartment after a huge storm. Despite being inundated with pleas for help, they made time to get to my apartment swiftly and dealt with climbing five flights of stairs as the lift was not working, carrying the heavy equipment needed to remove the water and fans to dry the carpets out. Wonderful attitude, service and follow up. I can’t thanks them enough. I highly recommend their services.”
